Historic Data Shows Vaccines Not Key in Declines in Death from Disease PDF Print E-mail

measlesdeclineMany of us have a picture of the 1800s that has been colored by a myriad of filters that have led us to a nostalgic and romantic view of that era. We picture a time where gentleman callers came to call upon a well-dressed lady in a finely furnished parlor. We imagine a time where people leisurely drifted down a river on a paddle wheel riverboat while sipping mint juleps and a time of more elegant travel aboard a steam train traveling through the countryside. We picture an elegant woman dressed in a long flowing gown leaving a sleek horse drawn carriage with the aid of a well-dressed man in a top hat. We think of those times where life was simple, ordered, in a near utopian world free of the many woes that plague modern society.

But if we remove those filters and cast a more objective light upon that time a different view emerges. Now imagine a world where workplaces had no health, safety, or minimum wage laws. It was a time where people put in 12 to 16 hours a day at the most tedious menial labor. Imagine bands of children roaming the streets out of control because their parents are laboring long days. Picture the city of New York surrounded not by suburbs, but by rings of smoldering garbage dumps and shantytowns. Imagine cities where hogs, horses, and dogs and their refuse were commonplace in the streets. Many infectious diseases were rampant throughout the world and in particular in the larger cities. This is not a description of the Third World, but was a large portion of America and other western cities only a century or so ago.

The Hidden Dangers Of Pre-Menopausal Mammography PDF Print E-mail
(1 vote, average 5.00 out of 5)
Written by Samuel S. Epstein, MD
Friday, 04 December 2009 15:24

womanWomen have been and remain assured that radiation exposure from pre-menopausal mammography is trivial, and similar to that from a routine chest x-ray, about 1/1000th of a rad (radiation absorbed dose). However, the practice of taking two mammograms for each breast results in 500 times greater radiation exposure of half a rad, focused on each breast, rather than on the entire chest. Thus, pre-menopausal women undergoing annual routine mammography over a ten-year period are exposed to a total of about 5 rads for each breast. This approximates to the very high radiation whole body exposure of women one mile away from where the atom bombs were dropped in Japan.

This information is not new. Furthermore, as recognized by the prestigious National Academy of Science in 1972, the pre-menopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, each rad exposure increasing the risk of breast cancer by one percent. This results in a cumulative 10 percent increased risk of breast cancer over ten years of pre-menopausal mammography. This warning was subsequently emphasized in my 1978 The Politics of Cancer, "Whatever you may be told, refuse routine mammograms, especially if you are pre-menopausal. The x-ray may increase your chances of getting cancer."
This warning against premenopausal mammography was further detailed in a 2001 scientific article, "The Dangers and Unreliability of Mammography: Breast Self Examination As A Safe Effective and Practical Alternative," published in the prestigious International Journal of Services. This was co-authored by Dr. Rosalie Bertell, a leading international expert on the dangers of radiation, the late Barbara Seaman, founder and leader of the women's breast cancer movement, and myself.

American Public Health Association Supports Ban On Hormonal Milk And Meat PDF Print E-mail
(3 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)
Written by Samuel S. Epstein, MD

bstfreemilkThe Cancer Prevention Coalition is pleased to announce that the Governing Council of the American Public Health Association has voted to oppose the continued sale and use of genetically engineered hormonal rBGH milk, and also meat adulterated with sex hormones. This decision is based on long-standing scientific and public policy information developed and published by the Cancer Prevention Coalition over the last two decades, as summarized below.

rBGH MILK
This hormone is injected in about 20% of U.S. dairy cows to increase milk production. While the industry claims that the hormone is safe for cows, and that the milk is safe for consumers, this is blatantly false.

  • rBGH makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 toxic veterinary effects, including mastitis, on the label of Posilac (rBGH,) which is injected in cows to increase milk production. Monsanto's Posilac product was acquired by Eli Lilly in 2008.

  • rBGH milk is contaminated by pus, due to mastitis, an udder infection commonly induced by the hormone, and also by antibiotics used to treat the mastitis.

  • rBGH milk is chemically and nutritionally different than natural milk.

  • Milk from cows injected with rBGH is contaminated with the hormone, traces of which are absorbed through the gut into the blood of people who consume this milk or its products.

  • rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of the natural growth factor (IGF-1), which is readily absorbed through the gut.

  • Excess levels of IGF-1 have been incriminated in well-documented scientific publications by the Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition as causes of breast, colon, and prostate cancers. Additionally, IGF-1 blocks natural defense mechanisms against early submicroscopic cancers.

Hormones in U.S. Beef Linked to Increased Cancer Risk PDF Print E-mail
(5 votes, average 3.80 out of 5)
Written by Samuel S. Epstein, MD
Sunday, 15 November 2009 17:06

meatBeef produced in the United States is heavily contaminated with natural or synthetic sex hormones, which are associated with an increased risk of reproductive and childhood cancers, warns Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition.

"Increased levels of sex hormones are linked to the escalating incidence of reproductive cancers in the United States since 1975 - 60% for prostate, 59% for testis, and 10% for breast," Dr. Epstein says.

The hormones in past and current use include the natural estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and the synthetic zeranol, trenbolone, and melengesterol.

When beef cattle enter feedlots, pellets of these hormones are implanted under the ear skin, a process that is repeated at the midpoint of their 100-day pre-slaughter fattening period, Dr. Epstein explains. These hormones increase carcass weight, adding over $80 in extra profit per animal.

Also, Dr. Epstein says, "Not surprisingly, but contrary to longstanding claims by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), residues of these hormones in meat are up to 20-fold higher than normal."

"Still higher residues result from the not uncommon illegal practice of implantation directly into muscle. Furthermore, contrary to misleading assurances, meat is still not monitored for hormone residues," Dr. Epstein emphasizes.

Commentary: The Medicated Child and the Compliant Parent PDF Print E-mail

pharmacyOn November 3rd, 2009 Frontline aired a program on the subject of a dramatic increase in the number of children being diagnosed with serious psychiatric disorders.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/medicatedchild/view/

These overly prescribed and strong behavior modifying medications are now just beginning to be tested in children. In recent years, the number of children being diagnosed with bipolar, which is considered a mental illness, and ADHD is not only shocking, but very disturbing.

The program opens with a video clip of an activist protesting on behalf of children's rights and bringing light to this epidemic sweeping across the nation.

A lot of the credit for lighting a fire under the FDA goes to the much-maligned anti psychiatry movement and its most prominent spokesperson, Peter R. Breggin, MD.  Dr. Breggin the author of many scientific articles and books which includes Toxic Psychiatry, and Medication Madness: A psychiatrist exposes the dangers of mood- altering medications (2008), for years along with a few others have been the lone voices in pointing out how drug companies have essentially bought and paid for the psychiatric establishment. This includes lead academic researchers who have been paid to lend credibility to questionable industry research. According to Dr Breggin, this research, most of which is done on adults, has been used to "justify coercing unsuspecting kids into submission".

Of Teenagers and Whales PDF Print E-mail
(2 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)
Written by Alice Shabecoff
Wednesday, 04 November 2009 01:26

mallYesterday evening, after my teenage granddaughter had finished her homework, we went at her request to a nearby mall. We drove, of course.

While she was hunting around for some new acquisition of the outlandish apparel teenagers relish these days, I sauntered idly around the shops. The stores are all chains common to malls across our country. She spent her time at two places I had never heard of, Rue 21 and Wet Seal, jam-packed with girls her age.

There was not a natural product among all the offerings as far as my eyes could see. Every item of apparel was constructed of a man-made fabric, mostly acrylic, some nylon. In the mall plaza where I then sat down to wait, a free-standing booth was selling wind-up toys, plastic one and all.

My granddaughter emerged with her purchases of a fake fur vest (acrylic) and animal-patterned tights (nylon). She explained she intended to wear this outfit as a Halloween costume, to be discarded after that single use.

The common thread (no pun intended) throughout the mall is petroleum. Both acrylic and nylon are manufactured from oil. Just as 98% of all manmade chemicals are. Acrylic was originally created by DuPont. Monsanto entered the picture when it developed a chemical process to keep acrylic from pilling.

Questioning the CDC 36,000 Deaths from Seasonal Flu Figure PDF Print E-mail
(8 votes, average 4.50 out of 5)
Written by Roman Bystrianyk

cdcfluweb2003portionIt’s cold and flu season and the news is filled with just how deadly influenza can be.  A figure that is frequently repeated in most news outlets when talking about the flu is that 36,000 people die each year from the flu.

Fox News

“H1N1 has been getting top line publicity and it’s important to know that seasonal flu takes a toll year in and year out,” Sebelius said. “But each year, 36,000 Americans die from the seasonal flu.”

New York Times

“… seasonal flu, which kills about 36,000 people annually.”

Wall Street Journal

“The seasonal flu sends an average of 200,000 Americans to the hospital each year, and 36,000 of them die, according to the CDC”

Orlando Sentinel

“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population is infected with seasonal flu each year… about 36,000 people die — mostly elderly.”

All these news reports leave the reader with a very specific and definitive figure of 36,000 people dying each year directly from the flu.  But where did this figure come from?  Most people would probably assume that careful statistics are kept to arrive at this figure.  However, this 36,000 number that is repeated so authoritatively is actually based on a single study published in 2003. A mathematical model was applied to estimate flu-related deaths by using death certificates where the cause of death was listed as respiratory or circulatory disease.

Doctors and nurses carry a burden of toxic chemicals just like yours…and your children’s PDF Print E-mail
(2 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)
Written by Alice Shabecoff

doctorsOur doctors and nurses carry as many harmful chemicals in their bodies as the rest of us. You might think that, being trained in chemistry and medicine (as most of us are not) and therefore perhaps more careful, not to mention highly-educated and relatively affluent, health care professionals would have found ways to avoid toxics. But they are in fact exposed to the same kinds of chemicals and hazards as workers in blue collar industries. A report published today by three nonprofit health-related organizations, "Toxic Chemicals Found in Doctors and Nurses," is the first examination of the ‘body burden' of 20 members of the medical profession. Every one of them carried toxic chemicals, every one carried 18 of the same chemicals, and each participant bore a burden of at least 24 individual chemicals of the 62 chemicals for which labs ran their analysis. That adds up to major chemical pollution with major potential for harm.

The bottom line from this study for all of us is, that we cannot shop or sanitize our way out of this problem. We need a shift in the way chemicals are made and sold and used.

The chemicals found in every one of these doctors and nurses include four that EPA is now considers top priority: bisphenol A (used to make rigid plastic polycarbonates), mercury, PFCs (for stain-resistant coatings), and phthalates (used in PVC plastics and cosmetics). Almost every participant also carried signs of flame retardants and the antimicrobial chemical triclosan, two other highly-suspect chemicals. One and all, these are endocrine disruptors, meaning they harm our hormonal systems. They can trigger reproductive problems, from testicular and breast cancer to lowered fertility, as well as altered brain development, and cancer, and they are linked to problems with our metabolism, such as obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
